The Best Halloween Books for Kids
We have a lot of books in our house, which is amazing, but we have to rotate because there is no way to have them all out at the same time. I try to swap the books out the first Monday of the month and usually incorporate a theme. Sometimes the theme is easy to select during holiday months, but I also incorporate some books not theme-specific to save my sanity from reading only about ghosts and pumpkins for 30 days. Read on to see what’s on our shelves this month with Halloween approaching.
Each of the girls has different wants and needs in books right now at ages 1, 3, and 5, so we have quite the range on the shelves. I try to keep only board books on the lowest shelf so our littlest one doesn’t rip any pages! Some of our books are not Halloween specific, but I like to have some general fall books and I included books that fit the aesthetic for the month.
Here is what we have on our shelves currently:
Top shelf
Triangle- Triangle tries to play a sneaky trick on Square, but it might not work out like he planned.
Bone Soup- In this spooky rendition of Stone Soup, Finnigin is a hungry skeleton in a new town on Halloween. Will he be able to stir up a creepy crawly meal using only a bone and some quick thinking?
They All Saw a Cat- I’ve had this book tucked away for almost 2 years and just read it for the first time a few weeks ago. I don’t know what I was waiting for! I thought it was meant for older kids, but it offers opportunity for observation and discussion on perception and imagination and just might be one of my favorites on display this month. The pictures are great for younger kids, even if they don’t understand the concepts just yet.
Olivia Saves the Circus- Olivia recalls how she saved the circus by participating in all of the acts! A cute story that highlights imagination and fits our black theme quite nicely.
Middle shelf
Froggy’s Halloween- My kids love all of the Froggy books, and this one is no exception. Froggy can’t decide what he wants to be for Halloween in this goofy story.
Sheep Trick or Treat- The sheep have another comical adventure, this time on Halloween night. This series is always cute and a kid favorite.
Hardly Haunted- This might be my second favorite book on this list, which is fairly impressive considering I’m not a haunted or Halloween fanatic. House might be haunted, but it still gets lonely when no one lives there. How will House find a family to move into her cobwebby and spooky walls?
It’s Raining Bats and Frogs- Delia tries to save the Halloween parade by changing the rain into a different form, but cats, clogs, and frogs don’t make flying any easier.
Only a Witch Can Fly- I love this author. A lovely book with themes of finding your own way, perseverance, and wonderful adventures.
Bottom shelf
Where is Baby’s Pumpkin- Baby finds so many wonderful Halloween surprises while searching for her special pumpkin. All of these books are adorable and babies love lifting the flaps.
Trick or Treat Little Pumpkin- The finger puppet and sweet rhymes make this board book so engaging for little ones. Ellette loves to eat the pumpkin puppet lately, but all of my kids have enjoyed this book every October.
The Bumpy Little Pumpkin- I was surprised with how much my older kids like this book. Follow along as Little Nell finds her perfect pumpkin and learns that pumpkins, just like people, are all unique and valuable.
Little Hands Love- This book is simple but has been a favorite of all three kids. The textures are sturdy (aka have held up incredibly well over the last 5 years) and fascinating for babies and toddlers. The colors on the front always remind me of fall, so we get this book out every October.
Seven Orange Pumpkins- Follow along as pumpkins disappear in a countdown to Halloween.
I have enjoyed Halloween so much more since having kids. Babies and kids in costumes are adorable and I’ll never forget the first time our oldest daughter had Halloween candy! Some of the books on this list have been our October favorites for years, but some are relatively new to us. I like to invest in books my kids love or ones I’ve read good things about. We also visit our local library often and the kids are free to pick any book they want. We have discovered some gems with this method.
I hope you enjoyed this book roundup and found a new book for your family from this list. Comment below which title you are buying and please, share this post with a friend! Your support means so much me to and I appreciate each and every one of you. Happy Halloween!
